Gaetano Berardi: A Warrior Bids Farewell
At the tender age of 34, our beloved Swiss defender Gaetano Berardi has decided to hang up his boots, drawing a close to a colourful career that has left indelible imprints on our hearts.
From his debut in the white of Leeds United back in 2014 after transferring from Sampdoria, Berardi soon etched his name into the annals of Leeds' history. And oh boy, did he make over 150 appearances for Leeds count. Each time he stepped onto the hallowed turf of Elland Road, he played with the kind of passion that would make any fan's heart swell with pride and an expectation of whose leg is going to get broken.
His committed playing style, coupled with a never-say-die attitude, quickly cemented his status as a fan favourite. Remember the side that won promotion to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020? Berardi was one of its key components, a relentless force on the field, always ready to put his body on the line for the club he loved1.
But life, as we know it, has its ups and downs. Berardi had his fair share of them, especially when he suffered a serious knee injury. But true to his warrior spirit, he battled back, making two top-flight appearances in the 2020-21 season. That's Berardi for you, folks. Never one to back down from a challenge, always giving his all.
Post-Leeds, Berardi had stints with Swiss clubs Sion and Bellinzona, proving that no matter where he played, he was always ready to give his heart and soul to the game.
In an emotional farewell message on Instagram, Berardi said: “A word can contain many emotions, many feelings, many memories and most of all many people. I choose one to close the chapter: THANK YOU!” And let us tell you, Gaetano, the feeling is mutual. Thank you for the memories, the passion, and the dedication you showed every time you donned the Leeds United jersey.
As we say goodbye to this stalwart of Leeds United, we can't help but feel a pang of sadness. But we also feel immense gratitude for having witnessed the career of such a dedicated and passionate player.
So here's to you, Gaetano Berardi. May your retirement be filled with the same joy and passion you brought to us, you'll always be a part of the Leeds United family. Once a White, always a White.
